The Rise of Afrobeats
A dynamic sound is dominating dance clubs and music charts from Lagos to London to Los Angeles. Even if you’ve never heard the name, there’s a good chance that you’re already accustomed to the sound. Afrobeats can be identified by their intricate rhythms, powerful percussion, continuous vocals, and Pidgin English. It makes sense that this music is becoming increasingly popular on a global scale given that it makes people want to dance in clubs all around the world. The Nigerian music style known as Afrobeats is revolutionizing the global music scene. The genre, which had been developing since the early 1990s, finally took off on the international music community with Drake’s 2016 song “One Dance,” which featured Nigerian musician Wizkid. Teyana Taylor and Chris Brown, among other US musicians, have incorporated Afrobeats sounds and African artists into their songs. The distinctive sound of Afrobeats is derived from West African musical genres, particularly highlife. Afrobeats should not be confused with Afrobeat, the genre created by Fela Kuti. Afrobeats is significantly different from Afrobeats since it is a strongly political, non-commercial music genre.
It would be difficult to mention all the artists who are producing hip-shaking hits. Therefore, if you’re just getting into Afrobeats, there are some well-known artists to start with and a ton more to find after that! The gifted young artist, Wizkid currently ranks among the most well-known Afrobeats musicians, giving him the name “Star Boy.” Several singles from his 2011 debut album Superstar helped him gain rapid notoriety. Tiwa Savage, one of Nigeria’s top female Afrobeats artists, has overcome challenges in the largely male-dominated music industry to become one of the most well-known Afrobeats performers in existence right now. MTV Europe Music Awards even awarded her Best African Act! Last but not least is Davido, who gained notoriety swiftly in 2011 with his debut album Omo Baba Owolo and maintained it with his follow-up album The Baddest. He was the first African musician to personally accept his award on the BET stage and won Best International Act at the BET Awards in both 2018 and 2014. Olamide, Tems, Burna Boy, and Rema are a few more well-known musicians. Undeniably, Afro beats artists created their own path to success on a global scale. These performers have only room to grow now that major record labels have taken notice
