This season the girl’s basketball team went above and beyond when it comes to court performance. They got down and didn’t play. This year, for the first time, the girl’s team hosted a regional tournament and even won both of their games at the tournament. The team has come such a long way to get to the state tournament, and they’ve shown lots of improvement. But what about their experience?
When hosting an event this big, so many exciting and memorable things can happen.“My highlight was watching our girls win regionals on their home court and just getting them to experience something they never had before,” Coach Martin said.
Naturally, no one is ever perfect, but I’m pretty sure every great team has its flaws. At least acknowledging these challenges can be a start to success. “Playing together and keeping our composure was a challenge, but we overcame that challenge because we still played like a team, ” junior Nakaiya Dillard said.
As a basketball player, the athletes always had to be prepared, especially in moments such as trying to make it to state, so keeping their tools sharpened was important. “There’s always room for improvement, so we just made sure our drills were perfect, and that we were playing hard because it was go big or go home,” Sanchez said.
Our whole team played so great together but some girls stood out more than others. “I’ll say Neveah Sanchez and Nykaiya Dillard stood out. Both of them played great offensively and defensively, and they had a lot of intensity on the court,” Coach Martin said.
It took a lot of hard work for the team to get here but being as good as our team can be easily accomplished with the same passion and dedication the athletes displayed. “Definitely join. The coaches here are awesome, and if you really want to do this, they can help you get to your desired level of skill, ” Dillard said.
After winning the regional tournament and eventually making it to the quarterfinals against Owasso. Sadly our ladies ended up not making it to the semi-finals and lost to Owasso 54-38. So, unfortunately they didn’t get to make it to the state championship, but that’s okay because we always have next year, and they’ll have plenty of time to work harder and make it to where they want to be.
