Malcolm X once said, “There can be no black – white unity until there is first some black unity.” Unity is very important in everybody’s lives, no matter the race. On August 28, 1963, 250,000 people marched on Washington for equality, job opportunities, the end of segregation and much more. On that revolutionary day, many people joined together to fight for their rights and demand freedom. Alliance is different people, groups, and countries coming together for a common goal.
Putnam City North used to have a BSA club before the pandemic.. But, now BSA is back with some activities and goals.
“The BSA club meets on Thursdays at 3:30 after school. BSA is a group for students to celebrate black culture and history, create events aligned with our culture, volunteer in the community, and social events. We plan on having events to find careers. The main goal is to build unity among black students and get your BAG right, (behavior, attendance, and grades)” Jones said.
The BSA club also has student leadership roles, such as President, Vice President, Treasurer etc. Everybody plays an important role in the club. “I am in charge of hosting the
meetings by presenting the agenda for that particular day through a slide show. I also oversee all the plans that each committee wants to establish in order to make sure the idea or activity is relevant and appropriate for BSA,” Atolagbe Oluwaseyi, President for BSA said.
Students have different reasons for joining a group or a club. “I wanted to join BSA because I believe that the black student body has not been represented nor given a voice at PCN for a couple of years now. I joined to help encourage my peers to give black students at PCN a voice and a platform for them to express who they are in a community that understands and supports their needs. I try to collaborate with my colleagues to come up with special events / activities hosted by BSA,” Oluwaseyi said.
A diverse community is a key factor of how we as human beings evolve overtime. “I wanted to be part of BSA because I think PCN needs more cultural clubs. There are so many ethnicities, cultures and groups of people that need to be highlighted and represented,” Adaeze Nebe, Vice president for BSA said.
In order to be a successful group things like good communication, leadership and more are needed. ”I wanted to be a part of something that showcased black student leadership, outreach and empowerment,” Uchechi Ejlugwu, treasurer for BSA.
