What do you see when you think about the future- flying cars, robots, drones? Drones
are a growing part of today’s society. They can deliver your food, be used for military
purposes, and much more. In World War I, drones were used for targets. The Aerial
Target was a radio directed aircraft made by Dr. Archibald Low. The target was tested,
but it wasn’t used in the war. In World War II, the OQ-2A drone was used as a practice
target for guns. Many years later in 1987, Yamaha, a motor company made a drone
called the R-50. The R-50 completed its task of dusting crops while moving a 15 –
kilogram payload.
From that point on, drones have become more prominent in society, and technology
advancements have greatly helped with that. Drones today can be used for many
purposes like delivery, agriculture, public safety, photography and more.
In 2005, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle
(UAV) called the General Atomic Altair. According to nasa.gov, the Altair did “mammal
observation and marine monitoring missions off the California coast.” The Altair also
helped by using its infrared imaging sensor to assist with finding fires.
In 2011, A French company called Parrot SA made a parrot drone. These drones have
multiple uses: search and rescue, tower inspection, military and defense, and more.
Unfortunately for Parrot, they got out of the consumer drone market. Some think it was
because of DJI’s success in the market and Parrot’s lack of success.
DJI is a Chinese drone company which started in 2013. These drones are used for
aerial videography and photography. One of DJIs latest drones is the DJI Flip drone.
The DJI Flip drone according to their website is ultra safe, boundless freedom, and
more. Even with all the features of DJI’s new drone, the United States is very cautious
of the DJI drones for safety reasons.
Quadcopters and Hexacopters are both UAVs that have great mobility and have the
ability to fly low for crop inspection. Crop inspection is very important because it can
identify problems with crops before they start.
Sky Element Drones is a company that has made an AI drone called AIRLink that can
also connect to 5G. According to sky-drones.com, “integrated 5G connectivity module
which provides lower latency and higher data.” Latency basically means buffering. This
drone can do a lot of things. It is an avionic drone, it has cameras, it can connect to the
internet etc.
One of the problems in the world today is air pollution. Air pollution is caused by big
trucks, factories etc. In some cases, a drone can be more environmentally friendly than
other transportation systems or factories.Drones also can deliver medicine, food,
vaccines, and more. Wingcopter is a German company that makes delivery drones.
These drones are very reliable and are able to travel long distances for deliveries. All of
these drones are special in their own way. The world is evolving and technology is
becoming a big part of society. One day we might have flying cars, robots, and drones.
