The Putnam City Girls Basketball team has been performing extraordinarily well this year, making breakthroughs and cementing their name in PCN history. They are setting standards and records so absolutely high that they’re breaking all the boundaries we ever thought were possible for us..
Nykaiya Dillard, a captain of the Girl’s Basketball team and a senior at Putnam City North, summarizes their achievements by saying “Right now, we’re currently district champions which means we are undefeated in our district. We are regional champions, which means we won the two games we host. Now we’re on our way to the area championship.”
But to get there, they had to face a lot of stressful moments and work really hard. The star player of the team Brandie Harrod, senior at PCN, notes that “We practice every day…if we don’t have practice during the week, then we find days before the games to get it done.”
Even then, the basketball team faces a lot of hard competition. Dillard describes their most stressful moment, out of many, to be “The Norman game. We were down on the whole game by double digits, but at the end of the fourth quarter – I don’t know what happened, but we kept our head in the game, stayed as a team, made the right passes, and it was really stressful.”
Through all their stresses, however, there is a sense of pride and connectedness these girl’s need to get past it all. “The girls work ethic, they work really hard even this past summer. They are very close to each other and they’ve stayed connected. They’re hungry to win,” Head Coach Logan Martin said. This is the hunger that keeps their eyes set forward, and on the prize.
As of now, the journey for these girl’s and the legacy of this team is just now beginning. They are strikingly paving the way for their name and this year to be etched into the history of Putnam City North, and the state, forever. When asked the highlight of the year so far, Coach Martin finds that it’s “Really this whole year. It’s been fun to coach these girls and have success.”
Their journey as peers, and their journey as talented basketball players will surely bring these girls success. Their achievements should not at all go undetected, as they go forth into their area game. And their goals going forward to this game is a culmination of all their efforts so far, and it is to, in the words of the other senior captain of the team, Haniya Geretta, “Get that gold ball!”
