Known for being a boxing legend, having his own grill, and becoming a minister, George Edward
Foreman was born on January 10, 1949 in Texas. Foreman was raised in Houston’s Fifth Ward.
Unfortunately, he grew up in poverty, and his childhood was violent. Foreman dropped out of
high school and hung out with some street gangs. A little later, he went to Job Corps, and they
hooked him up with Doc Broadus, a boxing trainer. Broadus wanted Foreman to use his fighting
skills in the ring. So, Broadus taught Foreman how to box. In 1967, Foreman had his first fight,
and he won by knockout in the first round.
In the 1968 Olympics, Foreman won a gold medal for defeating Jonas Cepulis by referee
stoppage. He started his professional boxing career in 1969. Foreman’s first fight was against
Donald Waldheim. Foreman won by knockout in three rounds. In his 28 year boxing career, he
has fought opponents like Joe Frazier, Ken Norton,and Muhammad Ali.
Foreman vs Frazier (The Sunshine Showdown) was in Jamaica in January, 1973. This fight
determined the Heavyweight Champion. Foreman knocked Frazier down six times, and
Foreman won by technical knockout (TKO). Foreman also fought Ken Norton, a heavyweight
champion, and in two rounds, Foreman won by TKO. George Foreman vs Muhammad Ali (The
Rumble in the Jungle) was one of the biggest fights in 1974. About a billion people watched on
TV and about 60,000 people attended the fight. Muhammad Ali won by knockout.
In 1994, at age 45, Foreman beat Michael Moorer, making Foreman the oldest to win a
heavyweight championship. Foreman’s professional career was from 1969-1977. He retired at
48 years old, with a record of 76 wins, 68 Knockouts, and 5 losses. In 1977, after a fight with
Jimmy Young, Foreman almost died from exhaustion and heat stroke. That experience drew him
to the Lord, and he retired from boxing.
After Foreman retired from boxing, he became a ringside boxing analyst for 12 years. He was
also a great entrepreneur. In 1994, Foreman made the popular George Foreman Grill. In 15
years of business, the Grill sold about 100 million units worldwide. The Grill has a slanted
surface to where the fat from the meat can be drained, making food a little healthier. In 1999,
Foreman sold the rights to the grill for about 113.7 million.
George Foreman had five wives and 12 children. On March 21, 2025 at age 76, Foreman
passed away. For now, his cause of death is unknown, but there is a rumor that he passed away
from natural causes. Foreman died in a Houston hospital, and he was surrounded by loved
ones in his passing. George Foreman was a minister, fighter, businessman, and much more.
