Since the television was produced for households, it’s always been fairly clear on what shows
were meant for children and what shows were meant for an adult audience. It’s rather easy to
tell which audience it’s intended for; kids’ shows are in bright, fun colors and adults’ shows are
mostly in greys and neutral tones. Recently, however, adult audiences have taken to watching
TV shows and films marketed towards children.
The most notable example of this would be Bluey, an animated show originating from Australia.
While it is mostly consumed by children, grown audiences have also taken a liking to it for its
clever writing. Parents in particular enjoy watching it as well, as they find it relatable and
entertaining.
There are many more examples of this as well, including Gravity Falls, She Ra and the Princess
of Power and Avatar: The Last Airbender. Adults are drawn to the screenwriting of childrens’ TV,
its cleverness, as well as the humanity and soul of it that is so lacking in modern stories. While
adults’ TV feels crude and robotic a great portion of the time, kids’ TV feels like it was made by
people, for people——tiny or otherwise.
The fact is that a lot of adults’ television being produced today lacks soul. Most TV series
nowadays are crude and lifeless, bringing little emotion to the viewer. A lot of the marketing in
adults’ TV is mostly just the fact that it is made for adults. They put in gorey scenes and
dramatic plotlines with no real substance, no real emotion. It’s no wonder that fed-up people
have stopped watching these shows and instead turned their attention to TV marketed towards
children.
People have differing opinions on this phenomena, of course. Some say it’s childish and idiotic
of these adults to watch shows clearly meant for children. Others say it’s not anyone else’s
business what other people watch on TV. It is worth pointing out, however, that a lot of today’s
adult television has gotten quite dull. Therefore, it goes without saying that adults can most
certainly watch the shows they find entertaining, no matter what age range it’s marketed to.
The entertainment industry is very versatile. There are millions of different shows for anyone
with a device to watch. There’s a very popular movie genre of “family,” which is marketed for
both children and their parents to enjoy. Why should TV shows be any different? It’s not a crime
to like “childish” subjects. Watch what you want to watch, and let other people watch what they
want to watch. It’s hurting literally no one, and is good for your mental health anyway. Studies
have shown that watching light-hearted cartoons can provide an escape from the negativity
surrounding the modern world.
So, no matter what you watch, I hope you can find pleasure and entertainment from your
screen. Just don’t judge others for their interests, be a good sport, and remember that
sometimes kid’s shows are actually pretty good.
