Artificial Intelligence (AI) is advancing rapidly in the world. Making your food, driving cars,

protecting your programs, are all things AI can do and more.

In 1952, Arthur Samuel made a program to play checkers. This invention was one of the first

uses of AI because the program was self taught. In 1955, a group of computer scientists went to

the Dartmouth summer workshop. John Mcarthy (Father of AI) set up the workshop in hopes of

brainstorming ideas about thinking machines. He chose the name artificial intelligence. From

there on, it was history.

Shakey was a robot with sensors and a camera created from 1966-1972. The purpose of

Shakey was to acquire more information about AI and see if it could function by itself in different

environments. In the late 1970’s, AI WInter began. AI WInter is when AI researchers got severe

funding cuts due to giving inaccurate information about the development of AI.

In 1986, the first driverless car was made by Ernst Dickmanns. Dickmanns had a Mercedes van

that had a computer system and sensors to analyze the environment. IBM created a computer

program called Deep Blue that played chess in 1996. The purpose of this invention was to beat

chess champion Gary Kasparov. Kasparov won the first six games of the series. A year later,

Deep Blue won the rematch.

Kismet was created by Dr. Cynthia Kismet in the late 1990’s. Kismet was a social robot that has

a sensor, microphone, and is able to analyze and have human feelings.

From 2000 to now, AI has been developing rapidly, with new studies and inventions. In 2004,

Mars was moving closer to Earth. So, NASA created rovers called Spirit and Opportunity and

sent them to Mars. The rovers used AI to navigate Mars and made decisions on their own,

rather than relying on humans. IBM did it again and made another program called Watson to

compete in Jeopardy. Watson beat Jeopardy champions Ken Jennings and Brad Rutter. Watson

used information from encyclopedias and the internet.

In 2011, Siri, by Apple was made. A few years later, Alexa, by Amazon was made. These AI

inventions can understand a question you ask, and depending on the question, can do it for you.

In 2020, when Covid-19 hit, AI has been used a lot for delivery, healthcare, and more. The

Chatbot, ChapGPT was created in 2022. ChatGPT can answer questions, correct your writing,

and you can even talk to it. There are many other companies similar to Chat GPT, like Apple

Intelligence, Google’s Gemini, and more. Websites like Brainly, Grammarly, and others also

have incorporated AI for academic assistance.

Some other things AI can do is make art, work in factories, make or replicate music, and much

more. At places like White Castles, Chick Fil A, and Chipotle. AI is used to help with food

preparation.Like all things in life, there are pros and cons. One company who has significantly influenced AI

is Nvidia. Nvidia is a technology company, known for making a graphics processing unit (GPU).

GPU helps improve AI applications and gaming. AI makes life easier for a lot of people, but it

also takes away jobs and makes some people afraid of being replaced. AI can be used for

good, and it can also be used in malicious ways. So, be cautious of AI.
