Ever since Covid Tik ok has been increasing in popularity at a rate that has never been seen before. Tik tok has captured the attention of billions of people around the globe. Even with that there is controversy of the app being a Chinese app trying to gather information about its enemies. the talks about banning Tik Tok in certain countries including the USA. There have been concerns of data privacy, national security, and influence because of the quick rise. Another controversy that there has been talks about is the timeline for the Tik tok ban; starting in 2020 in Trump’s presidency he proposed banning the app. Now that it’s 2025 the Legislation and Supreme Court has agreed to ban it and have taken the measures to do so. The problem is that now Trump likes Tik tok and isn’t enforcing the laws. With the checks and balances in the US it’s going against them.
The Supreme Court ruled in favor of banning Tik Tok making millions of users in the US extremely angry. However the app was back up after a day. This move has made many people confused on why it was banned in the first place if it was only going to be banned for a single day instead of permanently. The main reason for the ban in the first place was because it’s owned by a Chinese Company which some people have speculated that it saves your data and could hand over sensitive information about users to China since China has different data laws. Another reason is that India has banned Tik Tok causing the US to continue looking into the issue of Tik Tok.
If Tik Tok was actually banned it could be detrimental to millions of people. Some people Tik Tok is their main source of money and some people have their businesses on there selling things. Not only that but it would be going against the 1st amendment right of being able to express yourself however you want. Others also communicate with friends and or just make funny videos to have fun. Without Tik Tok it would be way more difficult to do these things. There is also the problem of people’s followings being gone, even if they do go to a different social media it wouldn’t be the same as Tik Tok. Tik Tok is also there for entertainment purposes. Most don’t even post but just watch other peoples videos. The magic about Tik Tok is that there is content for anyone. No matter what your interests are you can most likely find it on Tik tok. This is extremely prominent in high schoolers and young adults.
Another controversy is that other apps collect your information as well as Tik Tok but they’re not banned. Lawmakers say that because Tik Tok is owned by a Chinese company. If Tik Tok is banned it will example that will influence social media platforms forever. More and more people have become more weary of their data online because of this incident. If it is banned, users will act and use social media differently because of this controversy. And if not, it will continue to be a great way to show creativity and view funny videos with friends.
